ChatGPT Work
OpenAI's general agent: hand it a project and it works across your apps, files, browser and desktop for hours.
By OpenAI · launched 2026-07-09 · last checked 2026-11-01
Why 4: it breaks projects into steps and works through apps, a browser and computer use, running on schedules or triggers; you still approve important actions, so it is not fully ongoing.
What it does. Launched on 9 July 2026 as one of three modes, alongside Chat and Codex, in a new ChatGPT desktop app, and built on Codex. It breaks a project into steps, works through connected apps such as Slack, Google Drive and calendars, a built-in browser and, on desktop, computer use, and produces documents, spreadsheets, slides and small web apps. It can run once, on a schedule or when something changes, and you can watch, redirect it and approve important actions.
Where it falls short. TechCrunch's reviewer found setting up permissions "confusing and circular", could not grant read-only access to a cloud drive, and estimated that four days of casual use on a $20 plan burned about $65 of compute. No Remote Labor Index score has been published for Work; its predecessor, ChatGPT agent, automated 1.25% of projects.
