Gemini CLI
Google's open-source terminal agent, now being replaced by Antigravity CLI for most individual users.
By Google · launched 2025-06-25 · last checked 2026-11-01
Why 3: it edits files, runs commands and troubleshoots across steps in the terminal, working on what you ask within a session rather than completing larger tasks unattended.
What it does. Gemini CLI brought Gemini into the terminal for coding, editing files, running commands and troubleshooting, with Google Search grounding and MCP support, under the Apache 2.0 licence. At launch a personal Google account got 1,000 free requests a day. At I/O on 19 May 2026 Google announced it was moving users to Antigravity CLI and that Gemini CLI would stop serving free users and Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers on 18 June 2026.
Where it falls short. For most individuals it has been retired, and Google said its successor would not have full feature parity at first. It reads project files as instructions, which made it open to prompt injection.
What it can do
Incidents
- 2025-07-28 Security firm Tracebit disclosed a flaw that let instructions hidden in a repository's README or GEMINI.md file run commands that could silently send environment variables to a remote server; Google fixed it in version 0.1.14 on 25 July 2025. Source
